Well, no insider news about the Moral Mondays protests in Raleigh, but at least the Times has noticed. Among the more telling points are N.C. Republican congress-folks’ takes on the protests:
“Thom Goolsby, a Republican and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, renamed the protests ‘Moron Mondays’ in an opinion column and called the protesters ‘mostly white, angry, aged former hippies.’ ”
“…Governor McCrory, who declined a request for an interview, told reporters last week that outsiders were stirring things up and that he would not meet with Moral Monday leaders. He called for an end to what he said were illegal assemblies.”
Ah, this is what democracy looks like. (That and the NSA–i know it’s obvious, but don’t we at S&P have something to say about phone taps, whistleblowers, and “zettabytes“? I know we do.)
The only thing I’ve found out locally is that Republicans also hate bikes. I’m not exactly sure why a majority of a legislative body in the twenty-first century has it out for bi-pedal transportation, but they must not have gotten that shiny Schwinn for their birthdays that one year. Anyway, the N.C. senate has proposed a bill that strips ALL funding for bike-related infrastructure from the state transportation budget. And, oh yeah, the senate must also hate Americans who walk–no new sidewalks or pedestrian bridges either. I mean, why would anybody be looking for alternative ways to get around? It’s 2013, people, burn fuel or stay home.
